How to Cook a Medium Rare Steak

Cooking a steak to the perfect level of doneness can be a daunting task, but with a little know-how, you can easily achieve a medium-rare steak that’s juicy, flavorful, and tender. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the process of cooking a medium-rare steak step-by-step, so you can impress your family and friends with a restaurant-quality meal at home.

  1. Choosing the Right Steak:

The first step in cooking a medium-rare steak is selecting the right cut of meat. Some popular choices for medium-rare steak include ribeye, filet mignon, and strip steak. Look for a steak that is at least 1 inch thick and has marbling throughout, which will help keep the meat moist and flavoruful during cooking.

  1. Preparing the Steak:

Before cooking, let the steak sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes to ensure it cooks evenly. Season the steak generously with salt and pepper or your favourite steak seasoning. You can also add some herbs like rosemary or thyme for added flavour.

  1. Cooking the Steak:

There are several methods for cooking a medium-rare steak, but one of the most foolproof is using a meat thermometer. Preheat your oven to 400°F and heat a skillet or grill pan over high heat. Add a tablespoon of oil to the skillet and when it’s hot, add the steak. Cook the steak for 2-3 minutes on each side to sear the outside, then transfer it to the oven to finish cooking.

Insert the meat thermometer into the thickest part of the steak and cook until the internal temperature reaches 130°F for medium-rare. This will take around 10-12 minutes, depending on the thickness of the steak. Remember to flip the steak halfway through cooking for even browning.

  1. Resting and Serving the Steak:

Once the steak has reached the desired temperature, remove it from the oven and let it rest for 5-10 minutes before slicing. This allows the juices to redistribute throughout the meat, resulting in a more tender and flavorful steak. When ready to serve, slice the steak against the grain and drizzle with any pan juices or a sauce of your choice.

Cooking a medium-rare steak is all about balance and precision. By selecting the right cut of meat, seasoning it properly, and cooking it to the right temperature, you can create a delicious and juicy steak that will impress any steak lover. Remember to let the steak rest before slicing, and enjoy it with your favorite sides and a glass of red wine for the ultimate dining experience. Happy cooking!
